Kubera
White stucco with traces of pigment
Gandhara, c. 5th century
height 19.5cm, width 30cm
Ancient art is not something we collect- we lack the knowledge- but it always attracts and humbles.
This image of Kubera is pushing 2000 years old, yet it seems fresh. Aesthetically the statue ‘pops’ with an impish energy conveyed through bold features coupled to fluid plasticity.
Kubera- ‘The Lord of Wealth’- is Gandhara’s Gordon Gekko, lounging with his money pot and mace.
This work humbles. Two thousand years ago, the Afghan- Pakistan border was the crossroads of Asia and the breeding ground of great cultures that still shape our consciousness. This image begs the question: how far have we really come in 2000 years?
