Heisei period, 2005 Shigaraki ware, gold and colour inlay, zogan 25 (dia.) x 25.5 cm.
Sealed. Signed and sealed tomobako
A striking work. Between the trompe-l’oeil of gold segments, dark salmon-pink spirals writhe in dynamic patterns. Uetake uses an inlay, zogan, technique, incising the decoration into the body and filling this with coloured clay. The form is reminiscent of the applied spiral decoration found on pots from Japan’s ancient Jomon period. Dulled-gold gilds the rough-textured Shigaraki clay to anchor the exuberance of the writhing spiral forms. Randomly occurring across the whole are minute gold specks that add further shimmering life to the piece.
Born in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, Uetake was apprenticed in 1978 to the Kasama potter Nakano Koji, subsequently establishing his own kiln in 1984. Since 1994 his work has been regularly selected for the annual Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition, Nihon Dento Kogei-ten, and the biennial Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, Nihon Togei-ten. In the West, his work is held by the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
